Floating above a sidewalk commercial space, the full size basketball court gymnasium is a solid presence. Players can occasionally be seen in a blur of movement behind the band of glass below the framed sculpture. The graphic markings of sport courts and the movement of sport inspired the installation. Photography Kirk Hostetter.
The basketball court fills the entire rectangular building volume. Photography Kirk Hostetter.

Flock Behavior is a building scale sculptural installation commissioned by the developer of Brio Apartments, a mixed use complex in Bellevue, Washington. The project brief called for a three dimensional artwork responding to the development values of “community” and “sport.”
At the time, I was working with a team of architects to design an apartment complex when word got to the developer that I was also an artist and might be interested in a special opportunity. As a kind of project within a project, I created the concept and drawings for the sculpture shown here which was produced by the developer’s fabrication team. Inspired by the graphic markings of sport courts and movement of basketball I chose to use glass discs with various layers of color, transparency and opacity. The sixteen inch diameter discs are held off the wall surface with steel rods so that light and shadow from the sun and street lamps create different compositions throughout the day and the year.
