old Portland four square

A strategically light kitchen remodel in this old Portland four-square house. New design choices including paint, light fixtures, appliances, built-ins, and single-edition furniture elements establish a mood while adding functionality.
As any designer and some homeowners know, old quirky houses can be a challenge to remodel without demolishing and rebuilding entire rooms, which can be cost-prohibitive. In this case, it was the old brick service chimney in the corner of the room that had to be left in place and drove aspects of the design. Thus, lower cabinets and countertops were kept in place and refreshed with paint and hardware. A collaboration with local maker Todd Isaacs led to the new wood central island, custom steel bracket shelving system, and built-in cabinet unit. A new induction stove called for a new backdrop, which gained the beloved nickname "the cooking hearth." Glazed brick captured by a wood surround and softly illuminated by a well-placed light recall the warmth and coziness of a traditional fireplace.
